ASiG governs the appointment, duties and cooperation of occupational physicians and safety specialists in Germany. What matters in practice is turning that framework into effective daily support.
The Occupational Safety Act establishes professional roles and requires their effective involvement.
ASiG is intended to bring occupational health and safety expertise into the realities of each workplace. Employers appoint occupational physicians and safety specialists and support them in performing their duties.
The Act protects professional independence. It also requires cooperation between physicians and specialists, including joint inspections, and provides for an occupational safety committee under the conditions of section 11.

What does ASiG require employers to do?
Under its terms, the Act requires employers to appoint occupational physicians and safety specialists and support them in their duties. DGUV Regulation 2 further specifies their use.
What do occupational physicians and safety specialists do?
Both advise and support the employer. Physicians focus on occupational health; safety specialists focus on workplace safety and human-centred work design. The Act sets out additional observation, examination and participation duties.
When is an occupational safety committee required?
Section 11 ASiG generally provides for a committee in workplaces with more than twenty employees unless another legal rule says otherwise. It discusses occupational safety matters and meets at least quarterly.
